Mission Complete presented the Inaugural Veterans Awards ceremony on November 11, 2015 at our Nation's Capital. Guests included representatives from distinguished Veteran organizations, Washington dignitaries, Celebrities such as Actress Kate Walsh, Colin Egglesfield and Veterans themselves, along with their loving families. The Veterans Awards honor those organizations that have dedicated their work to creating an America where our nation’s heroes are able to live the lives they deserve and access the assistance that is promised to them.

Veterans Day was initially established in November 1919 by President Wilson following WWI as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. On May 13, 1938, an act was approved, making the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday—a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as "Armistice Day." Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after the urging of the veterans service organizations, the Act of 1938 was amended by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting in its place the word "Veterans." On June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. Gedalia

National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts began in 1997 to advance the presence of Latinos in the media, telecommunications and entertainment industries. The Foundation has concentrated on increasing access for Hispanic artists and professionals while fostering the emergence of new Hispanic talent.
The Hispanic community – which makes up 16 percent of the U.S. population – has become the nation's largest ethnic minority group and is increasingly recognized for its potentially enormous consumer and political power. The entertainment industry has been making progress, but an enormous gap still exists before the Hispanic community is adequately reflected on stage and on both the small and big screens.   Gedalia

Dedication Ceremony for the Disabled Veterans Life Memorial with President Barack Obama. Through the juxtaposition of granite and glass, the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial conveys a combination of strength and vulnerability, loss and renewal. At this sacred spot, all of us—sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, wives, husbands and friends—have the opportunity to learn the important lessons of courage, sacrifice, tenacity, loyalty and honor by bearing witness to the experiences of our heroes who are disabled. The focal point of the Memorial is a star-shaped fountain, its surface broken only by a single ceremonial flame. A grove of trees stands sentry beside the reflecting pool, signifying the persistence of hope. Dedicated to both the living and the deceased—a setting for coming together or quiet meditation—the Memorial holds a special place in the hearts of all Americans, and serves as a never-ending reminder to all of the cost of human conflict. The legendary annual Virginia Gold Cup steeplechasing classic, now run before a sellout crowd of over 50,000 people, comes from much simpler beginnings.

Steeplechasing in Virginia has been a way of life since early Colonial times when the horse was the primary way of transportation, farming and war.  George Washington and Thomas Jefferson met in sporting competition over fences. Organized steeplechase races have run in Fauquier County since 1844 originally at White Sulphur Springs then a fashionable spa near Warrenton. On October 20, 1984, before a crowd of 8,500 with some 80 horses on a seven-race card the International Gold Cup started a new chapter. In keeping with Virginia’s tradition of being the nation’s leader of timber racing, the International Gold Cup became a timber race. In 1989, the International Gold Cup race was awarded stakes designation by the National Steeplechase Association.

Today, the International Gold Cup presented by Porsche attracts 35,000 spectators and features the Fegentri World Cup of Nation’s where the top international amateur jockeys vying for the series title. Gedalia

The JDRF annual DC Hope Gala is an extraordinary event, each year bringing together more than 700 prominent members of the Washington, D.C. community for a sparkling evening of fine dining, stellar entertainment and an exciting auction that each year raises millions towards funding research to prevent, treat and ultimately cure type 1 diabetes. Each person in attendance has the unique opportunity to directly impact and advance T1D research and technology advancements through his/her participation.

JDRF has led the search for a cure for T1D since our founding in 1970. In those days, people commonly called the disease “juvenile diabetes” because it was frequently diagnosed in, and strongly associated with, young children. JDRF began as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes both children and adults suddenly. It has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent it. And, at present, there is no cure. JDRF works every day to change the reality of this disease for millions of people—and to prevent anyone else from ever knowing it—by funding research, advocating for government support of research and new therapies, ensuring new therapies come to market and connecting and engaging the T1D community.  Gedalia Vera

On Monday, April 6th, 2015, the First Family hosted the 137th annual White House Easter Egg Roll. This year’s theme was “‪#‎GimmeFive‬,” and more than 35,000 people gathered on the South Lawn to join in the celebrations. Keeping history alive, the event featured sports and fitness zones, cooking demonstrations, and Easter classics such as the egg roll and egg hunt, live music and storytelling. In addition to all of the fun, the day’s activities encouraged children to lead healthy, active lives in support of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative.

The White House Easter Egg Roll is a tradition that dates to 1878. Originally, young children in Washington, D.C., would flock to Capitol Hill every Monday after Easter for egg rolling and a day of activities. Members of Congress grew tired of the growing crowds and passed an Act of Congress which prohibited egg rolling on the Capitol grounds. The event was moved to the White House in 1878 after President Hayes was approached by young children to use his backyard to roll eggs. Nearly every Easter since, the White House has invited young children to roll eggs on the White House lawn.

Today, the Easter Egg Roll has grown from a few local children rolling eggs on the White House lawn to become the largest event held at the White House, filled with live entertainment, sports and interactive cooking demonstrations, and, of course, the traditional rolling of the Easter eggs. The Easter Egg Roll promotes healthy and active living and is designed for children 13 years of age and under. Gedalia
